Introduction: The Divine Command That Cannot Be Ignored
In an age of compromise and confusion, some have dared to claim that praying behind hypocrites is acceptable, even suggesting the Quran permits it. This dangerous falsehood contradicts explicit divine commands and threatens the very foundation of sincere worship. This comprehensive analysis will demonstrate through irrefutable Quranic evidence that praying behind hypocrites is not merely discouraged – it is absolutely forbidden by God Himself.
The article we refute attempts to use selective interpretation and ignores the totality of Quranic guidance. We will systematically dismantle each false claim and present the complete Quranic verdict: You must NEVER pray behind those who oppose God and His messenger, who mock His revelations, or who practice hypocrisy.
Part 1: The Explicit Divine Prohibition – God’s Unambiguous Command
The Clearest Evidence: Verses 9:107-108
The Quran provides an absolutely clear prohibition that destroys any argument for praying behind hypocrites:
[9:107] “There are those who abuse the masjid by practicing idol worship, dividing the believers, and providing comfort to those who oppose God and His messenger. They solemnly swear: ‘Our intentions are honorable!’ God bears witness that they are liars.”
This verse identifies hypocrites who:
- Abuse the masjid with idol worship (mentioning names other than God)
- Divide the believers (creating sectarianism)
- Support those who oppose God and His messenger
- Lie about their intentions while God exposes their falsehood
The divine verdict on such masjids and those who lead them:
[9:108] “You shall never pray in such a masjid. A masjid that is established on the basis of righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your praying therein. In it, there are people who love to be purified. God loves those who purify themselves.”
The Arabic phrase “لَا تَقُمْ فِيهِ أَبَدًا” (la taqum fihi abadan) means “NEVER stand/pray in it EVER.” This is not a suggestion or recommendation – it is an absolute divine prohibition. The word “abadan” (أَبَدًا) means “forever, ever, at any time” – making this prohibition eternal and unconditional.
Part 2: Refuting the False Claim – “The Quran Doesn’t Explicitly Forbid It”
Direct Refutation of Their Central Argument
The article falsely claims: “Search the Quran cover to cover, and you will not find a single verse that says ‘do not pray behind a hypocrite’ or ‘praying behind a hypocrite nullifies your prayer.’”
This is demonstrably false. Verse 9:108 explicitly commands “You shall NEVER pray in such a masjid” – referring to masjids where hypocrites lead. If you cannot pray in their masjids, how can you pray behind them? The prohibition is absolute.
Furthermore, the Quran commands:
[33:48] “Do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites, disregard their insults, and put your trust in God; God suffices as an advocate.”
How can you follow someone in prayer – the most important act of worship – when God explicitly commands you NOT to obey them? Following an imam in prayer is the ultimate act of obedience. You stand when they stand, bow when they bow, prostrate when they prostrate. This is precisely the obedience God forbids.
Part 3: The Deductive Proof – 17 Verses That Make It Impossible
Building an Irrefutable Case
Rashad Khalifa, in his sermon of December 28, 1989, provided a deductive argument using 17 verses that make praying behind hypocrites impossible. Let’s examine this systematic proof:
1. Who Can Lead Prayer? Only the Righteous
[2:124] “Recall that Abraham was put to the test by his Lord, through certain commands, and he fulfilled them. (God) said, ‘I am appointing you as an imam for the people.’ He said, ‘And also my descendants?’ He said, ‘My covenant does not include the transgressors.’”
God’s covenant of leadership (imamship) explicitly EXCLUDES transgressors. Hypocrites are the worst transgressors. Therefore, they cannot be imams.
2. The Command Not to Obey
[33:1] “O you prophet, you shall reverence God and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. God is Omniscient, Most Wise.”
[76:24] “You shall steadfastly carry out your Lord’s commandments, and do not obey any sinful disbeliever among them.”
[25:52] “Therefore, do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with this, a great striving.”
Following someone in prayer is the highest form of religious obedience. These verses make it impossible.
3. The State of Hypocrites’ Prayer
[4:142] “The hypocrites think that they are deceiving God, but He is the One who leads them on. When they get up for the Contact Prayer (Salat), they get up lazily. That is because they only show off in front of the people, and rarely do they think of God.”
How can you pray behind someone who:
- Prays lazily without devotion
- Only shows off to people
- Rarely thinks of God
- Is actively being deceived by God

4. The Command to Avoid Their Gatherings
[4:140] “He has instructed you in the scripture that: if you hear God’s revelations being mocked and ridiculed, you shall not sit with them, unless they delve into another subject. Otherwise, you will be as guilty as they are. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers together in Hell.”
If we cannot even SIT with them when they mock God’s revelations, how can we PRAY behind them? The verse warns that doing so makes us “as guilty as they are.”
5. Only Believers Should Frequent God’s Masjids
[9:17] “The idol worshipers are not to frequent the masjids of God, while confessing their disbelief. These have nullified their works, and they will abide forever in Hell.”
[9:18] “The only people to frequent God’s masjids are those who believe in God and the Last Day, and observe the Contact Prayers (Salat), and give the obligatory charity (Zakat), and do not fear except God. These will surely be among the guided ones.”
If hypocrites shouldn’t even frequent God’s masjids, how can they LEAD prayer in them?
Part 4: The Devastating Consequences – What Happens When You Disobey
The Spiritual Destruction
The Quran warns of severe consequences for those who pray behind hypocrites:
1. Your Prayer Becomes Invalid
Since hypocrites’ own prayers are rejected (their works are nullified – 9:17), following them nullifies your prayer. You cannot reach God through someone He has rejected.
2. You Share in Their Guilt
Verse 4:140 explicitly states that sitting with those who mock God’s revelations makes you “as guilty as they are.” How much more guilty when you follow them in prayer?
3. You Violate God’s Direct Commands
By praying behind hypocrites, you violate:
- The command never to pray in their masjids (9:108)
- The command not to obey them (33:48)
- The command to avoid their gatherings (4:140)
- The command to stand devoted to God ALONE (7:29)
4. You Support Division Among Believers
Hypocrites “divide the believers” (9:107). By following them, you participate in this division, violating:
[3:103] “You shall hold fast to the rope of God, all of you, and do not be divided…”

Part 5: Refuting Their Misuse of Verse 4:88
The Context They Ignored
The article misuses verse 4:88 to claim we shouldn’t judge hypocrites. Let’s see what this verse actually says:
[4:88] “Why should you divide yourselves into two groups regarding hypocrites (among you)? God is the one who condemned them because of their own behavior. Do you want to guide those who are sent astray by God? Whomever God sends astray, you can never find a way to guide them.”
This verse doesn’t say “don’t identify hypocrites” or “pray behind them anyway.” It says:
- God Himself has condemned them
- God has sent them astray
- We cannot guide those God has sent astray
- We shouldn’t be divided about their status – God has already judged them
The verse actually confirms we should recognize whom God has condemned and act accordingly!
Part 6: True Versus Suspected Hypocrites
The Clear Criteria
The article creates confusion by discussing “suspected” hypocrites. The Quran provides clear criteria for identification:
1. They Mention Names Other Than God
As stated in the footnote to 9:107: “Any masjid where the practices are not devoted absolutely to God ALONE belongs to Satan, not God. For example, mentioning the names of Abraham, Muhammad, and/or Ali in the Azan and/or the Salat prayers violates God’s commandments in 2:136, 2:285, 3:84, & 72:18.”
This alone disqualifies 99% of traditional imams who mention Muhammad in their prayers.
2. They Mock or Reject Quranic Verses
[4:140] “He has instructed you in the scripture that: if you hear God’s revelations being mocked and ridiculed, you shall not sit with them…”
Those who mock the mathematical miracle, reject Quran-alone, or add hadith to God’s religion fall into this category. Those who refute and fight the messenger of the covenant falls even greater into the depths of despair. They’re duplicitous, claiming righteousness when their desire is to obfuscate it.
3. They Show Observable Signs
- Lazy in prayer (4:142)
- Only pray to show off (4:142)
- Create division among believers (9:107)
- Support those who oppose God’s message (9:107) – Like those who oppose Rashad, in part or full.
Part 7: The Hadith Corruption – How They Justify the Unjustifiable
Exposing the Source of Confusion
The article relies on hadith narrations to justify praying behind hypocrites. This is precisely the problem – abandoning God’s clear commands for human fabrications. They cite stories and sayings attributed to the prophet that contradict the Quran itself.
God commands:
[6:114] “Shall I seek other than God as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed?”
[45:6] “These are God’s revelations that we recite to you truthfully. In which hadith other than God and His revelations do they believe?”
By using hadith to override Quranic commands, they prove themselves to be among those who:
[6:112] “We have permitted the enemies of every prophet – human and jinn devils – to inspire in each other fancy words, in order to deceive. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. You shall disregard them and their fabrications.”
Part 8: The Community Pressure Fallacy
When Following the Crowd Leads to Hell
The article implies we should pray behind hypocrites to maintain community unity or avoid judgment. The Quran destroys this argument:
[2:166-167] “Those who were followed will disown those who followed them. They will see the retribution, and all ties among them will be severed. Those who followed will say, ‘If we can get another chance, we will disown them, as they have disowned us.’ God thus shows them the consequences of their works as nothing but remorse; they will never exit Hell.”
Following false leaders for social harmony leads to eternal regret. The Quran commands:
[5:2] “…You shall cooperate in matters of righteousness and piety; do not cooperate in matters that are sinful and evil…”
Praying behind hypocrites is cooperation in sin, not righteousness.
Part 9: The Mosque Without Walls – Where True Believers Pray
God’s Earth Is Your Masjid
Some argue: “But there are no other masjids in my area except those led by hypocrites.” The Quran provides the solution:
[2:115] “To God belongs the east and the west; wherever you go there will be the presence of God. God is Omnipresent, Omniscient.”
Rashad Khalifa emphasized that the whole earth is a masjid. You can pray:
- In your home
- In a park
- In your office
- Anywhere clean
- Alone with God
Better to pray alone in righteousness than in congregation behind a hypocrite.

Part 10: The Test of True Faith
Standing Alone for God
The prohibition against praying behind hypocrites tests our true submission:
[29:2] “Do the people think that they will be left to say, ‘We believe,’ without being put to the test?”
This test reveals:
- Do we fear God or people?
- Do we seek God’s approval or social acceptance?
- Do we follow Quran or tradition?
- Do we stand for truth or comfort?
- Do we obey God and his messenger and submit a total submission?
[2:165] “Yet, some people set up idols to rival God, and love them as if they are God. Those who believe love God the most…”
[4:65] Never indeed, by your Lord; they are not believers unless they come to you to judge in their disputes, then find no hesitation in their hearts whatsoever in accepting your judgment. They must submit a total submission.
If we love God most, we will never compromise His commands for anyone.
Part 11: Historical Proof – The Companions’ Practice
What the Early Believers Did
Even historical sources confirm that sincere believers refused to pray behind hypocrites:
- They would repeat their prayers if forced to pray behind a suspected hypocrite
- They would leave the congregation if a hypocrite led
- They established separate prayer areas for sincere believers
- They recognized that prayer behind hypocrites was invalid
The modern deviation of accepting hypocrite imams comes from political convenience, not religious truth.
Part 12: The Solution – Establishing Righteous Congregations
Building Masjids on Righteousness
The Quran provides the solution:
[9:108] “…A masjid that is established on the basis of righteousness from the first day is more worthy of your praying therein…”
True believers must:
- Establish congregations based on Quran alone
- Select imams who worship God alone
- Reject all forms of idol worship
- Create communities of sincere believers
- Support each other in righteousness
Part 13: The Divine Promise for Those Who Stand Firm
God’s Support for the Sincere
For those worried about praying alone or in small groups, God promises:
[22:40] “…God will surely support those who support Him. God is Powerful, Almighty.”
[47:7] “O you who believe, if you support God, He will support you, and strengthen your foothold.”
Quality over quantity:
[8:65] “…twenty steadfast believers can defeat two hundred, and one hundred of them can defeat one thousand of those who disbelieved…”
A single sincere prayer is worth more than thousands behind a hypocrite.
Part 14: The Final Warning – Choose Whom You Follow
The Day of Judgment Reality
On the Day of Judgment, the reality will be exposed:
[17:71] “The day will come when we summon every people, together with their record. As for those who are given a record of righteousness, they will read their record and will not suffer the least injustice.”
You will be summoned with your imam – the one you chose to follow. If you followed hypocrites:
[4:145] “The hypocrites will be committed to the lowest pit of Hell, and you will find no one to help them.”
Choose wisely whom you follow in prayer, for you are choosing your eternal company.
Part 15: Rashad Khalifa’s Direct Teaching – The Places of Worship Belong to God Alone
The Messenger’s Clear Guidance
Rashad Khalifa, the Messenger of the Covenant, provided explicit guidance on this matter. In his Quran Study of May 19, 1989, he emphasized:
“This is the places of worship and the act of worship. When you do the prayer, or the fasting, or the Hajj. You must be devoted to God alone. In the Khutbah and in the Quranic study, in the Quran and so on. The Quran itself says, mentions, in connection with the scripture.”
This directly relates to verse 72:18:
[72:18] “The places of worship belong to God; do not call on anyone else beside God.”
When imams mention names other than God in their prayers, they violate this fundamental command. How can you pray behind someone who turns God’s masjid into a place of idol worship?
What About Masjids Led by Hypocrites?
In another crucial teaching (Messenger Audio 18.1), Rashad Khalifa was asked directly about praying in such masjids:
Question: “What does that mean, in this situation? Do you pray in such a mosque?”
Rashad: “No, no… It’s like any other place where there’s no mosque. God will understand you, you know. Actually, it is not a mosque. It’s not a mosque, why is there no God?”
He further clarified:
“We have a mosque where there are only robes and memorabilia. And only Qur’an is treated. So, I would run for my life, I wouldn’t go there. But in another place where there isn’t that choice… Then it’s just like being at work or anywhere. So, I pray there too. It’s the only place where I can pray.”
When asked specifically about the Ahmadiyya Mosque, he responded:
“You wouldn’t go to the Ahmadiyya Mosque here on the street, would you? Because you know, they idolize…”
The message is crystal clear: A masjid where idol worship occurs is NOT a true masjid. It’s better to pray anywhere else – at work, at home, in nature – than to participate in congregational prayer led by those who violate God’s fundamental commands.
Conclusion: The Clear Quranic Verdict
The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. The Quran absolutely prohibits praying behind hypocrites through:
- Direct Commands: “Never pray in such a masjid” (9:108)
- Prohibition of Obedience: “Do not obey the disbelievers and hypocrites” (33:48)
- Warning of Shared Guilt: “You will be as guilty as they are” (4:140)
- Exclusion from Leadership: “My covenant does not include the transgressors” (2:124)
- Nullification of Their Works: “These have nullified their works” (9:17)
The article attempting to justify praying behind hypocrites relies on:
- Hadith fabrications that contradict the Quran
- Selective interpretation ignoring clear verses
- Social pressure over divine commands
- Traditional practice over Quranic truth
For every sincere believer, the choice is clear: Stand with God even if you stand alone, rather than compromise with hypocrites in congregation. Your prayer directly to God, in solitude if necessary, is infinitely more valuable than any prayer behind those who God has condemned.
The earth is vast, and God is everywhere. Find your clean space, face your qiblah, and connect directly with your Creator. Let the hypocrites lead each other to their mutual destruction while you maintain your covenant with God alone.
This is the truth from your Lord. Let those who choose to follow hypocrites bear their own burden. As for you, dear believer, you have been warned with clear evidence from both the Quran and God’s messenger. Choose God, choose righteousness, and never compromise your worship for anyone.
